The Venus de Milo, an ancient Greek marble statue widely believed to represent Aphrodite, was discovered in 1820 on the island of Milos by a local farmer named Yorgos Kentrotas. Dating to approximately 130–100 BCE, the sculpture is attributed to Alexandros of Antioch and reflects the transition from the classical ideals of balance and restraint to the more dynamic and expressive forms of the Hellenistic period. Its missing arms—lost sometime after its creation or during its rediscovery—have only added to its mystique, prompting centuries of speculation about its original pose. Acquired by France shortly after its discovery and presented to King Louis XVIII, the statue has since become one of the most celebrated works in the Louvre Museum, symbolizing both the enduring legacy of ancient Greek art and the Western canon’s ideal of feminine beauty.
